When the weekend comes around, it can be a fun and free time to enjoy a workout with your whole family. While you may typically exercise on your own when you have the time to fit it into your busy schedule, by getting fit with the whole family you can get a workout in while spending time with your favorite people.

Enjoying exercise as a family can also help teach your kids healthy habits around exercise and physical activity. Working out doesn’t have to be a dreaded or required activity. It can be a fun, challenging experience that leaves you feeling healthy and happy. Here are some workout ideas to inspire you and your family this weekend.

Consider Your Families Age and Interests

Working out as a family should be an activity that’s accessible for everyone. Consider what age your kids are and associated activities that might be appropriate for their physical abilities. Take stock of what activities your family enjoys doing together and where you can add to your routine with exercise. If your kids love going to the pool, get in with them and see who can swim across the pool fastest. By catering your exercise activities to your family’s ability levels and interests, you set your whole family up for an enjoyable experience.

Plan a Day Trip

If you and your family have a whole day free, plan a day trip to explore an area or activity you haven’t tried before. Pack up your car (or bikes) with plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and active gear and take to the mountains, lakes, parks, or activity centers in your state. Your workout options depend on what’s in your area and what fitness interests your family shares, but getting out of your house on an adventure together can create memories you won’t forget.

Family-Friendly Circuit Training

If you’re looking for an intense workout that still caters to the fitness levels of the rest of your family, create your own training circuit. You can create special activity spots with kid-friendly exercise activities like jumping rope or bear crawls while you and your more active family members can do body-weight exercises and short bursts of high intensity cardio. Exercising while spending time with your family doesn’t have to mean you don’t get a good sweat going. It only takes a little creativity to find exercises that work well for every member of your family.

Let Your Family Guide Your Activities

If someone in your family has a fitness activity that they’re passionate about, let them lead the way for your weekend workout. Providing a space for your kids, spouse, or other family members to share their fitness passions can have you trying new activities as well as targeting different muscle groups. It also builds confidence in your kids when they feel like the one in charge. Let them show you their cool moves and follow in their footsteps.
