There’s no better cheerleader in your fitness journey than a supportive family. And a great way to support your family in their fitness and enjoy bonding time is by exercising together. Regular exercise is a powerful tool to inspire a good mood, which means that a family workout can often be a happy time spent together as a family. This is particularly powerful when our day-to-day lives are so busy.
Fall is the perfect season to start a family workout habit, as the weather gets cool and your family’s schedule may be settling into a routine. And there’s never a bad time of year to start a new tradition or routine with your family to add to your bonding, quality time, and fun! Here are a few family-friendly fitness ideas for your fall.
Play a Family Sport
You don’t need to be a pro (or even very good) to grab a soccer ball, volleyball, lacrosse stick, or other sports equipment and head outside. It’s hard to find better weather for a Saturday in the park than during the fall, so take advantage before Winter sneaks up on us. This is a great family option if you have kids who play a sport. Let them be the teacher and give the family an easy lesson. Not only will you be bonding as a family and learning a new skill, your kiddo can enjoy feeling like they’re in charge!
Visit a Corn Maze or Pumpkin Patch
There’s only one season a year where you and your family can enjoy the fall fun of a pumpkin patch or corn maze. Take advantage, bundle up, and add some fitness into your busy schedule with a long walk in a corn field!
If you enjoy your fall foray, add a regular family walk around the neighborhood into the mix. Walking is a powerful form of fitness, even though it may seem sedate if you’re used to more time spent in the gym or doing heavy cardio. Particularly given how much time our families spend sitting — with work, driving, school, and screen time — ending your day with a family walk helps with circulation, digestion, and provides an uninterrupted bonding opportunity with your kids.
Go For a Bike Ride
A family bike ride is a fun and easy way to spend time together and enjoy your community. Take a ride through your neighborhood or a nearby park. Bike riding is a great family activity, as it can be adapted to fit your entire family’s fitness level. If your family is less experienced with bike riding, take a short meandering ride around your neighborhood. As you gain experience and endurance on a bike, you can plan longer, more difficult rides that can build your family’s strength and endurance. Bicycling is also a low-impact activity, meaning that it’s good for adults with tender joints and for older kids and teenagers who want to cross-train in the off-season of sports teams.
